Help Yourself by Dotkom

Posted 15 April 2010   Mixes

I’ve been addicted to music as long as I can remember.  It all started with Abbey Road, The Wall & Songs in the Key of Life (Thanks Dad).  I had my first actual DJ gig in 6th grade playing tunes for the 7th & 8th grade dance.  My best friend at the time, Todd Kuchar and I played ANY gig we could get.  In 1994 we (My brother Scott & I) moved to Reno, NV from Loomis, CA.  The “Hip Hop” part of our lives started early but we didn’t consider ourselves “Hip Hop DJ’s” until we started spinning exclusively underground Hip Hop records at The Blue Lamp in downtown Reno around 1996.  That gig turned into “Hip Hop Tuesday” and the OPEN MIC was born.  We continued Tuesdays for over a decade at numerous venues.  In 1998 we were approached to be on the FM radio & “The Bombshelter” was born on KWYL 93.7 FM in Reno, NV (now 102.9fm).  Wow I just rambled…anyways I’ve been making mixes like this one (Help Yourself) for many years.  Recently I have streamlined my process so they come out ALLOT more like I imagine & pretty quickly too.   The songs & audio clips are relevant to whatever I was hearing/seeing/feeling at that time.  Sometimes just making SOMETHING to get your feelings out helps allot.  I have several more that I will post soon but this is the most recent.

“Help Yourself” – Deejay Dotkom [4-14-2010]*

While typing out that tracklisting I realized I’ve a had a rough few months and this mix is my meditation on them.  “On to the next one” as Jay Z would say.  I miss allot of people on a daily basis,  some are gone, some are still here but for whatever STUPID reason we don’t hug everyday.  If you feel like these mixes might be about you thats ok, they probably are.  This quote from Posdnuos of De La Soul pretty well sums it up:

“Old friends gave me dead eyes
and fake smiles, half wide
We were supposed to rid the world of danger
These days we nod heads and small talk like polite strangers
It’s natural to fall off, just land close to the tree
I’ll be there if they need me to be” – Posdnuos

Peaceoneloverespect,
